Handmade Sunglasses – Are They Worth It

Is it only because of the brand name chic attributed to the expensive designer labels?

What are the differences between the expensive designer brands and the less expensive Walmart type brands?

Other than the somewhat intangible brand name recognition factor there are only two real differences in the cheaper shades and the expensive handmade sunglasses.  Materials and production methods.

How they’re made and what they’re made of.

The cheap sunglasses that you see in the gas station or drug store are similar in appearance to the expensive designer handmade sunglasses but if you look closely at a few things you can spot the differences.

The inexpensive brands are all made with cheap plastic and they are all made by a process of injection molding. Just like how plastic pens, cheap plastic toys or plastic lighters are produced.

Hot liquid plastic is injected under pressure into a mold of the frame. This is a very simple, fast and automated process. Someone pushes a button at one end and after about 20 seconds an inexpensive plastic sunglasses frame is spit out of the other end of the machine.

Most of the expensive designer handmade sunglasses are made out of Acetate. Acetate also known as Cellulose Acetate or Zyl is derived from organic cellulose cotton fibers. It is renewable and eco friendly.

The frame is carved or sculpted out of a solid block of Acetate. This is a much longer more labor intensive process than injection molding and takes several skilled crafts people to make a single frame.

Acetate handmade sunglasses frames are superior for many reasons.

Acetate is a much softer material than the plastic used in injection molding. They are much more comfortable to wear especially where the frame makes contact on the bridge and at the temples. They will not leave those nasty red marks on your nose.
For temple adjustments look for an embedded wire in the arm of the sunglasses. This helps them to maintain the adjusted shape. The injection frames will not have this embedded wire and are not adjustable.

Acetate frames are more malleable. They can be bent to adjust the fit. Injection plastic does not have this quality. If you accidentally sit on your expensive sunglasses chances are they will just bend where the harder plastic ones may break.

Acetate handmade sunglasses can be fitted with prescription lenses or if your lens is scratched you can have it replaced.

The cheap pair will quite often have the lenses glued into the frame so changing the lenses is not an option.

As a material Acetate has many advantages over injection plastic.

Acetate frames are carved from a block of Acetate. The color, texture and pattern run through the entire block of material. They are homogeneous to the material. Acetate can be hand polished and buffed to really bring out the characters of the material. This is how the depth and brilliance of color and pattern are achieved.

Injection molded frames are one color. Any additional color must be painted onto the plastic. Quite often you can spot the over sprayed areas. The glossy finish is a sprayed on epoxy coating. This coating will degrade over time and crack, bubble or just fall off.

Designer handmade sunglasses cost more, there is no question but you get something totally different than cheap plastic shades. You get handmade craftsmanship, enhanced durability, color depth and pattern. Plus the ability to adjust for fit and install prescription lenses or replace damaged lenses.

Of course there is that name brand recognition that goes with owning the designer pair of sunglasses as well.

There are some designer brands of expensive sunglasses that are injection molded. But now you should be able to spot the differences of injection frames to quality handmade sunglasses made from Acetate.
